Senior Grades BJA
There are
six senior (learner) grades, called "KYU" and ten senior (teacher)
grades, called "DAN".
Promotion
within the Kyu grades is based on technical knowledge
and understanding, together with Japanese terminology and supplementary
knowledge. There is no contest requirement in the Kyu
Grade syllabus however there is a progressively structured Randori
(Free-Practice demonstration) element at the higher grades, where at the
highest level,Randori is
based on open skills.
Promotion
within the Dan grades may be done one of five ways:
1. Competitive: The traditional method
of gaining promotion based on skill in contest, theoretical knowledge and
ability to demonstrate specific techniques.
2. Technical: An examination of a
candidate’s technical understanding and knowledge of specific techniques.
3. High Grades above 5th Dan: Are by
BJA Board of Directors decision based on International Judo Federation (IJF)/
European Judo Union (EJU) guidelines and National Promotion Commission
recommendation.
4. Outstanding Performance: Again a
BJA Board of Directors decision based on the Outstanding Performance policy and
Promotion Commission recommendation for International and ex-international
judoka.
5. Honorary: This is extremely rare
and is a BJA Board of Directors decision, normally for non-judo people.
